Judge advises Catriona Carey to attend court or face arrest warrant

A woman who is charged with a number of motoring offences has been told to appear in court on Monday or a warrant will be issued for her arrest. 

 

The case involving Catriona Carey, of Weir View Hill, Castlecomer Road, Kilkenny, was listed for Tuesday’s sitting of Kilkenny District Court. 

 

Ms Carey is charged with driving without insurance or a driving licence at Weir View, Kilkenny, on October 21st last. She is also charged with the same offences at Glendine, Castlecomer Road on November 21st last. 

 

The accused did not appear in court in person but solicitor Ed Hughes informed the judge that Ms Carey had emailed his office on Monday and might have been under the impression that he would represent her. 

 

However, the solicitor said he had a difficulty in doing so and asked for the case to be adjourned for one week so he could inform Ms Carey that he would not be representing her. 

 

Sgt Morgan O’Connor said he was keen for Ms Carey to appear before the court on the motoring charges. Judge Geraldine Carthy asked Mr Hughes to communicate to Ms Carey that if she does not attend the court next Monday and it will result in a bench warrant being issued. 

 

Ms Carey, an accountant and former Ireland international hockey player, recently featured in an RTÉ Investigates programme which alleged she was involved in a scam in which dozens of people with distressed property loans lost money. 

 

Her company Careysfort Asset Estates took deposits and offered to return the fees if deals to buy their debts from lenders at a discount did not materialise. Gardaí are investigating the payments and the manner in which they were secured after receiving a number of complaints.
